Larry Fowler, author of Raising a Modern-Day Joseph, presented his research on the spiritual state of young adults in America to his church’s Bible study class. Larry told the class that at least one in two youth who have trusted Christ for salvation abandon their faith after graduating from high school.

After Larry’s presentation, a man in the class rose to speak. Choking back tears, he quietly revealed that "I'm 1 for 3" – only one of his three children still walked with God as adults.

A second father then stood and made an even more painful admission: “I’m 0 for 2.” Parent after parent followed suit, sharing how some or even all of their grown children had left the faith of their youth behind.

“All of a sudden,” Larry recalled, “I realized my church is one of those churches where kids are falling away from God. We’re not alone. Every pastor I’ve talked to after one of my presentations has said, ‘This crisis is at my church, too.”

Raising children to know and follow Jesus is our highest calling as parents. It’s also our greatest challenge, especially in today’s world.
