PowerUP Summer Activities
Important note: ANY summertime contact
should take place with the approval of the child’s parent and be
in accordance with your church’s child protection policies.
ONE
Just because kids don’t complete their books
during the club year doesn’t mean they can’t work on them
during the summer. Encourage them appropriately with get-togethers
and incentives.
For example, hold a summer version of Super
Section Saturdays. Invite the child’s family (if you desire,
invite all your clubbers and their families) out for ice cream or over
for a cookout. In the invitation, encourage the child to have some
sections ready to say. Award a special prize for the child if he/she
meets a goal. Not only is this a good way to keep kids in the Word,
it shows great hospitality and outreach to families and can even be
a time to reinforce some of the values of the Awana ministry to the
parent.
TWO
Encourage PARENTS to help their kids finish their
books over the summer. Offer a special pre-new-club-year Awana cookout
or picnic in August or September for every family whose child completed
an unfinished book over the summer. Of course, the clubber will have
to say his sections to a leader to get credit.
THREE
Tell your kids’ parents about the Bible-BASED
series, which goes along with T&T Book One, Book
Two and Book Three. Parents can read the book that goes
along with the handbook their child just completed and use it as a
daily devotional. In addition to giving parents a richness of God’s
Word – the same verses that his or her child memorized
over the past club year – the books also suggest ways to disciple
those truths into a child’s life. What a great way for a kid
to be brought back around to his/her memory work!
FOUR
Why not initiate a summer Scripture memory challenge
with the “finish line” being the first night of club next
year? Pick accessible passages such as Psalm 100, Ephesians 6:10-17,
etc. Hand out schedules and tips to parents on Awards Night and encourage
them to do the verses WITH their kids over the summer. On opening night
2007, every kid who has memorized and can quote a given passage gets
a prize … and if a parent can also quote it, then award the child
a DOUBLE prize. If the clubber brings a visitor to the event, the friend
gets the DOUBLE prize, too! There’s sure to be a lot of excitement!
FIVE
Club newsletters Sparkles (for
Sparks) and KidsPrint (for
T&T) will be available with new issues throughout the summer and
will continue to be a good source of ideas. Find them on your club’s
online page. A summer-only feature in KidsPrint includes BrainCheck,
which leaders can mail to their clubbers. BrainCheck is a weekly Bible
study that reinforces what a child has learned in T&T.
SIX
T&T Web games will still be available at www.awana.org/ttcards.
These games reinforce T&T handbook knowledge.
SEVEN
Introduce your church families to the power and
energy of a High Power Soccer camp.
In addition to experiencing fun and fellowship, campers memorize a
key verse. These camps are also designed as an attractive outreach
for presenting the gospel to unsaved children in your community.
