Most people on the island country of Aruba speak Papiamento, an unusual language mix of Spanish, Dutch, English, and Portuguese. Aruba’s language reflects its proud independence and difference from the rest of the Dutch Caribbean islands. Translation for Bible materials is necessary to reach this people group; Awana Aruba serves the churches with materials in Papiamento as well as Spanish. Awana exists in Aruba to reach kids with the incredible news of the gospel, equip leaders there with courage and proven training methods, and to change the lives of many who wonder if life can provide something more.
Reaching Kids in Aruba
There are around 20,000 children in Aruba today under the age of 15. Teenage drug addiction and illegitimate births plague young people there the most. Providing mentoring and discipleship, Awana Aruba is able to come alongside through local churches in ways foreign organizations cannot. Since the first club began there in 2001, the gospel of Christ has shown each child in Awana that he or she is precious to God and created specially by Him!
Every week, Awana Aruba reaches 764 children with the gospel in their heart languages through 7 clubs.
Equipping Leaders in Aruba
Awana is a proven program for reaching kids with the gospel. But it disciples the rest of the church through equipping the Awana club leaders, a need particularly felt in Aruba’s emerging evangelical church, which is trying to unify with other churches for maximum impact. Each Awana program is built upon leadership that is trained to reach children, like those who use our Leader-Based Strategy (LBS) curriculum.
National missionaries, who understand the complexity of their countries, assist the churches which use the Awana program.
Changing the World in Aruba
Other countries are not like the U.S., where kids have an array of choices for church activities. When a church starts the Awana program, children have a meaningful and fun place to go as they learn about the gospel. Adults are discipled and trained to make more disciples. Awana seeks to reach more children in Aruba with the gospel and equip more leaders there.
