Bulgaria’s rich Christian history in Orthodoxy extends back many centuries. Now with religious freedoms in place, evangelism and charismatic churches are making headway. However, past troubles surface in current economic troubles, resulting in widespread problems. For instance, more abortions take place than live births, and young, bright students often try to emigrate elsewhere. Awana Bulgaria aims to bring hope to the people of Bulgaria. It works by teaching kids the incredible news of the gospel, equipping leaders with discipleship, courage, and proven training methods, and changing the lives of many who wonder if life can provide something more.
Reaching Kids in Bulgaria
There are almost one million children in Bulgaria today under the age of 15, the time of life when they will be most open and receptive to the message of the gospel. Well educated, children here need the Biblically sound, age-appropriate materials that the Awana program provides. When children are mentored in the gospel from an early age, a new generation of Christians in Bulgaria will result. Since the first club began there in 2003, the gospel of Christ has shown each child in Awana that he or she is precious to God and created especially by Him!
Every week, Awana Bulgaria reaches 25 children with the gospel in their heart language through 1 club.
Equipping Leaders in Bulgaria
Awana is a proven program for reaching kids with the gospel. But it disciples the rest of the church through equipping the Awana club leaders with courage and joy in spreading the gospel. Leadership here needs additional training to understand error so they can teach God’s Word accurately. Each Awana program is built upon leadership that is trained to reach children, like those who use our Leader-Based Strategy (LBS) curriculum.
National missionaries, who understand the complexity of their countries, assist the churches which use the Awana program.
Changing the World in Bulgaria
In Europe, people tend to see Christianity as “old” and uninteresting. Awana debunks those myths! Unlike many American churches, most European churches have no children’s ministry. When a church starts the Awana program, children have a meaningful and fun place to go as they learn about the gospel. Adults are discipled and trained to make more disciples. Awana seeks to reach more children in Bulgaria with the gospel and equip more leaders there.
