With a roughly 90% Muslim and 10% Christian population, Egypt sees much persecution of Christians. However, religious authorities there are witnessing a large number of Muslims coming to faith in Christ— in some ways, maybe the persecution is backfiring! Awana Egypt supports the Christian church there by reaching kids with the incredible news of the gospel, equipping leaders with discipleship, courage, and proven training methods, and changing the lives of many who wonder if life can provide something more.
Reaching Kids in Egypt
There are almost 28 million children in Egypt today under the age of 15, the time of life when they will be most open and receptive to the message of the gospel. These children desperately need to know the eternal love and hope that only a life in Christ provides. With the largest Awana presence in the Middle East, Awana Egypt is able to come alongside through local churches in ways foreign organizations cannot. Since the first club began there in 1997, the gospel of Christ has shown each child in Awana that he or she is precious to God and created especially by Him!
Every week, Awana Egypt reaches 18,883 children with the gospel in their heart language through 144 clubs.
Equipping Leaders in Egypt
Awana is a proven program for reaching kids with the gospel. But it disciples the rest of the church through equipping the Awana club leaders, a need particularly felt in Egypt’s evangelical church where even pastors have had little training. Each Awana program is built upon leadership that is trained to reach children, like those who use our Leader-Based Strategy (LBS) curriculum. National missionaries, who understand the complexity of their countries, assist the churches which use the Awana program.
In Egypt, there are three missionaries or missionary couples serving the churches with Awana clubs. They help the churches to implement the program and train the leaders. A national director provides training and oversight for the missionaries.
Changing the World in Egypt
Other countries are not like the U.S., where kids have an array of choices for activities. When a church starts the Awana program, children have a meaningful and fun place to go as they learn about the gospel. Adults are discipled and trained to make more disciples. Awana seeks to reach more children in Egypt with the gospel and equip more leaders there.
