India is 74% Hindu and less than 6% Christian, but that percentage is rapidly growing. The increase of Christianity there in recent years is due to ministries like Awana India, which reach out to children to benefit churches and entire communities. Awana exists in India to reach kids with the incredible news of the gospel, equip leaders with proven training methods, and to change the lives of many who wonder if life can provide something more.
Reaching Kids in India
There are over 350 million children in India today under the age of 15. Poverty affects many of them with millions forced into homelessness, child labor, or prostitution. In some areas, the outlawed caste system still determines that the future for each child will be the same as generations past. Awana India doesn’t make those distinctions. Since the first club began there in 1991, the gospel of Christ has shown each child in Awana that he or she is precious to God and created specially by Him!
Every week, Awana India reaches 483,603 children with the gospel in their heart languages through 7,058 clubs.
Equipping Leaders in India
Awana is a proven program for reaching kids with the gospel. But it disciples the rest of the church through equipping the Awana club leaders. Each Awana program is built upon leadership that is trained to reach children, like those who use our Leader-Based Strategy (LBS) curriculum. National missionaries, who understand the complexity of their countries, assist the churches which use the Awana program.
In India, there are 13 missionaries or missionary couples serving the churches with Awana clubs. They help churches to implement the program and train their leaders. Because of the large Awana ministry in India, a national director and a director of development also work alongside the missionaries.
Changing the World in India
Other countries are not like the U.S., where kids have an array of choices for activities. Some children in India have to labor alongside their parents instead of attending school. They have few outlets for enjoyment. When a church starts the Awana program, children have a meaningful and fun place to go as they learn about the gospel. Adults are discipled and trained to make more disciples. Awana seeks to reach more children in India with the gospel and equip more leaders there.
