Oman’s long-reigning sultan, on the throne since 1970, has maintained political stability and the freedom to practice one’s own religion for the Omani people. However, evangelizing Muslims is still against the law, a heavy discouragement for Christian believers there. As a result, they tend to be expatriates, people from other countries, instead of native Omanis. Awana Oman supports the Christian church there by reaching kids with the incredible news of the gospel, equipping leaders with discipleship, courage, and proven training methods, and changing the lives of many who wonder if life can provide something more.
Reaching Kids in Oman
There are almost one million children in Oman today under the age of 15, the time of life when they will be most open and receptive to the message of the gospel. These children desperately need to know the eternal love and hope that only a life in Christ provides. Awana Oman is able to come alongside through local churches in ways foreign organizations cannot. Since the first club began there in 1998, the gospel of Christ has shown each child in Awana that he or she is precious to God and created especially by Him!
Every week, Awana Oman reaches 72 children with the gospel through 2 clubs.
Equipping Leaders in Oman
Awana is a proven program for reaching kids with the gospel. But it disciples the rest of the church through equipping the Awana club leaders, a need particularly felt in Oman’s evangelical church where even pastors have had no or little training. Many Christians emigrate from Oman in search of a more peaceful existence, leaving the church without mature and trained leadership. To cope with that, each Awana program is built upon leadership that is trained to reach children, like those who use our Leader-Based Strategy (LBS) curriculum.
National missionaries, who understand the complexity of their countries, assist the churches which use the Awana program.
Changing the World in Oman
Other countries are not like the U.S., where kids have an array of choices for activities. When a church starts the Awana program, children have a meaningful and fun place to go as they learn about the gospel. Adults are discipled and trained to make more disciples. Awana seeks to reach more children in Oman with the gospel and equip more leaders there.
