The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is the second largest country by area on the African continent. Yet frequent war, a corrupt government and nearly non-existent infrastructure have reduced the nation to one of the world’s poorest countries. This hopelessness provides many opportunities for Christian ministries like Awana DRC to minister through already established churches. Awana DRC exists to reach kids with the incredible news of the gospel, equip leaders there with mentorship, courage, and proven training methods, and to change the lives of many who wonder if life can provide something more.
Reaching Kids in Democratic Republic of Congo
There are over 31 million children in DRC today under the age of 15, nearly half of the total population. Many of them are street children, orphaned by AIDS, war and broken homes. There are also an estimated 10,000 children serving as child soldiers with various militia groups. The children of DRC desperately need to hear the gospel. Awana DRC provides these children mentoring and discipleship through local churches. Since the first club started in 2015, the gospel of Christ has shown each child in Awana that he or she is precious to God and created especially by Him!
Every week, Awana Democratic Republic of Congo’s reaches 2,793 children with the gospel in their heart languages through 59 clubs.
Equipping Leaders in Democratic Republic of Congo
Awana is a proven program for reaching kids with the gospel. But it disciples the rest of the church through equipping the Awana club leaders, a need particularly felt in Democratic Republic of Congo’s evangelical church. Discipleship connects people to the church and gives them roles for service within the church and the community. Each Awana program is built upon leadership that is trained to reach children, like those who use our Leader-Based Strategy (LBS) curriculum.
National missionaries, who understand the complexity of their countries, assist the churches which use the Awana program.
Changing the World in Democratic Republic of Congo
Other countries are not like the U.S., where kids have an array of choices for church activities. When a church starts the Awana program, children have a meaningful and fun place to go as they learn about the gospel. Adults are discipled and trained to make more disciples. Awana seeks to reach more children in Democratic Republic of Congo with the gospel and equip more leaders there.
