Japan’s 2011 earthquake and tsunami did more than destroy buildings and level towns; it also shook the foundation of Japanese faith in ancestral worship, education, and hard work. Many have started questioning their faith and are investigating the claims of Christianity. That’s where Awana Japan can help. It supports the churches there by teaching kids the incredible news of the gospel, equipping leaders with discipleship, courage, and proven training methods, and changing the lives of many who wonder if life can provide something more.
Reaching Kids in Japan
There are over 16 million children in Japan today under the age of 15, the time of life when they will be most open and receptive to the message of the gospel. It’s a perfect time for them to be mentored through a solid Biblical program like Awana. Mentorship is a major way for them to avoid the dangers of social isolation, which entraps young people in Japan. Since the first international Awana club began there in 1983, the gospel of Christ has shown each child in Awana that he or she is precious to God and created especially by Him!
Every week, Awana Japan reaches 1,207 children with the gospel in their heart language through 42 clubs.
Equipping Leaders in Japan
Awana is a proven program for reaching kids with the gospel. But it disciples the rest of the church through equipping the Awana club leaders with courage and joy in spreading the gospel. Each Awana program is built upon leadership that is trained to reach children, like those who use our Leader-Based Strategy (LBS) curriculum.
National missionaries, who understand the complexity of their countries, assist the churches which use the Awana program. In Japan, there are three missionary couples and one missionary serving the churches with Awana clubs. They help the churches to implement the program and train the leaders.
Changing the World in Japan
What a powerful combination Awana is for the people of Japan and the rest of the Pacific Rim: solid, Biblical teaching for kids with trustworthy discipleship for adults. Many are coming to know the Lord and be discipled in a progressive manner through the Awana program. It’s a program that works across many demographics and denominations. Together, this combination can change the world within a church, a community, and a country.
