In Latvia, there is freedom for all forms of religious expression. Although most of the population claims to be Christian, only a small minority actually practices their faith. Nominalism then leads to a breakdown in morality. However, challenges to societal values have helped to bring the churches together in unity. Awana Latvia supports these churches further by reaching kids with the incredible news of the gospel, equipping leaders with discipleship, courage, and proven training methods, and changing the lives of many who wonder if life can provide something more.
Reaching Kids in Latvia
There are around 300,000 children in Latvia today under the age of 15, the time of life when they will be most open and receptive to the message of the gospel. Well educated, children here need the kind of Biblically solid, age-appropriate Christian materials Awana Latvia is able to provide. Bringing kids to Christ and mentoring them along the way will raise up a new generation of Christians. Since the first club began there in 2000, the gospel of Christ has shown each child in Awana that he or she is precious to God and created especially by Him!
Every week, Awana Latvia reaches 442 children with the gospel in their heart languages through 17 clubs.
Equipping Leaders in Latvia
Awana is a proven program for reaching kids with the gospel. But it disciples the rest of the church through equipping the Awana club leaders with courage and joy in spreading the gospel. Each Awana program is built upon leadership that is trained to reach children, like those who use our Leader-Based Strategy (LBS) curriculum.
National missionaries, who understand the complexity of their countries, assist the churches which use the Awana program. In Latvia, there is one missionary couple serving the churches with Awana clubs. They help the churches to implement the program and train the leaders.
Changing the World in Latvia
In Europe, people tend to see Christianity as “old” and uninteresting. Awana debunks those myths! Unlike many American churches, most European churches have no children’s ministry. When a church starts the Awana program, children have a meaningful and fun place to go as they learn about the gospel. Adults are discipled and trained to make more disciples. Awana seeks to reach more children in Latvia with the gospel and equip more leaders there.
