Norway’s extensive Christian history includes strong churches in the Lutheran and Evangelical Free denominations, and its missions agencies focus on both home and global needs. In fact, Norway has always been one of the top sending countries for missionaries. However, despite the good news, the reality is that only 4% of the rest of the country regularly attends church. Most of them are the older generation. Awana Norway aims to raise up a new generation of Christians by teaching kids the incredible news of the gospel, equipping leaders with discipleship, courage, and proven training methods, and changing the lives of many who wonder if life can provide something more.
Reaching Kids in Norway
There are almost one million children in Norway today under the age of 15, the time of life when they will be most open and receptive to the message of the gospel. Well educated, children here need the Biblically sound, age-appropriate materials that the Awana program provides. When children are mentored in the gospel from an early age, a new generation of Christians in Norway will result. Since the first club began there in 1993, the gospel of Christ has shown each child in Awana that he or she is precious to God and created especially by Him!
Every week, Awana Norway reaches 291 children with the gospel through 2 clubs.
Equipping Leaders in Norway
Awana is a proven program for reaching kids with the gospel. But it disciples the rest of the church through equipping the Awana club leaders with courage and joy in spreading the gospel. Nominally committed believers in Norway need to be captured by God’s truth and resist relying on their country’s Christian heritage. Each Awana program is built upon leadership that is trained to reach children, like those who use our Leader-Based Strategy (LBS) curriculum.
National missionaries, who understand the complexity of their countries, assist the churches which use the Awana program.
Changing the World in Norway
In Europe, people tend to see Christianity as “old” and uninteresting. Awana debunks those myths! Unlike many American churches, most European churches have no children’s ministry. When a church starts the Awana program, children have a meaningful and fun place to go as they learn about the gospel. Adults are discipled and trained to make more disciples. Awana seeks to reach more children in Norway with the gospel and equip more leaders there.
