Quite possibly the country with the greatest potential for wealth in the world, Sierra Leone is one of the poorest. Anarchy created battles over its gold and diamond mines, and the people of Sierra Leone are still healing from the atrocities committed during that time. Holistic Christian ministry is working, however, and changes in people’s lives go deep. Awana Sierra Leone is a part of that change; it exists to reach kids with the straightforward news of the gospel, equip leaders there with mentorship, courage, and proven training methods, and to change the lives of many who wonder if life can provide something more.
Reaching Kids in Sierra Leone
There are over 2 million children in Sierra Leone today under the age of 15—an unusually low number due to displacement and Sierra Leone’s many conflicts. Instead of a spiritual melting pot, children need to be taught the gospel through solid Biblical materials. Providing mentoring and discipleship, Awana Sierra Leone is able to come alongside through local churches in ways foreign organizations cannot. Since the first club began there in 2013, the gospel of Christ has shown each child in Awana that he or she is precious to God and created especially by Him!
Every week, Awana Sierra Leone reaches 18,189 children with the gospel in their heart language through 155 clubs.
Equipping Leaders in Sierra Leone
Awana is a proven program for reaching kids with the gospel. Yet it disciples the rest of the church through equipping the Awana club leaders, an essential need in Sierra Leone’s emerging evangelical church. Each Awana program is built upon leadership that is trained to reach children, like those who use our Leader-Based Strategy (LBS) curriculum. The fast growth of Awana Sierra Leone is testimony to its well-trained leaders.
National missionaries, who understand the complexity of their countries, assist the churches which use the Awana program.
Changing the World in Sierra Leone
Countries in Africa are not like the U.S., where kids have an array of choices for activities. When a church starts the Awana program in Sierra Leone, children have a meaningful and fun place to go as they learn about the gospel. Adults are discipled and trained to make more disciples. Awana seeks to reach more children in Sierra Leone with the gospel and equip more leaders there.
