Unfinished business continues to plague the post-apartheid nation of South Africa. Over 60% of the population reside in cities, where shantytowns and slums are witnesses of deep inequalities. However, the many seminaries and Christian schools are also signposts to a brighter future. Awana South Africa exists to help with the divide between peoples. It reaches out to kids with the news of the gospel, equips leaders with mentorship, courage, and proven training methods, and changes the lives of many who wonder if life can provide something more.
Reaching Kids in South Africa
There are over 13 million children in South Africa today under the age of 15, including those targeted in sex trafficking and those orphaned by AIDs. Obviously, children in South Africa do not always have a safe and fun environment in which just to be kids. Providing mentoring and discipleship, Awana South Africa is able to come alongside through local churches in ways foreign organizations cannot. Since the first club began there in 1982, the gospel of Christ has shown each child in Awana that he or she is precious to God and created especially by Him!
Every week, Awana South Africa reaches 20,637 children with the gospel in their heart language through 336 clubs.
Equipping Leaders in South Africa
Awana is a proven program for reaching kids with the gospel. But it disciples the rest of the church through equipping the Awana club leaders, a need particularly felt in South Africa’s separated families. Discipleship connects people to the church and gives them roles for service within the church and the community. Each Awana program is built upon leadership that is trained to reach children, like those who use our Leader-Based Strategy (LBS) curriculum.
National missionaries, who understand the complexity of their countries, assist the churches which use the Awana program.
Changing the World in South Africa
Other countries are not like the U.S., where kids have an array of choices for church activities. When a church starts the Awana program, children have a meaningful and fun place to go as they learn about the gospel. Adults are discipled and trained to make more disciples. Awana seeks to reach more children in South Africa with the gospel and equip more leaders there.
