Despite having over 99% Muslim believers today, Tunisia has a past rich in Christianity. Secularism and an Islamic government have driven most Christian believers to meet behind closed doors. The government has seized church property and lands, making it difficult to worship in the open. Awana Tunisia seeks to help believers there cope with these extensive challenges. It exists to reach kids with the incredible news of the gospel, equip leaders there with discipleship, courage, and proven training methods, and to change the lives of many who wonder if life can provide something more.
Reaching Kids in Tunisia
There are 2.5 million children in Tunisia today under the age of 15, the time of life when they will be most open and receptive to the message of the gospel. This is particularly important in an almost totally Muslim society. These children desperately need to know the eternal love and hope that only a life in Christ provides. Awana Tunisia is able to come alongside through local churches in ways foreign organizations cannot. Since the first club began there in 2008, the gospel of Christ has shown each child in Awana that he or she is precious to God and created especially by Him!
Every week, Awana Tunisia reaches 40 children with the gospel through 1 club.
Equipping Leaders in Tunisia
Awana is a proven program for reaching kids with the gospel. But it disciples the rest of the church through equipping the Awana club leaders, a need particularly felt in Tunisia’s small Christian churches. Persecution from growing Islamic extremist groups requires strong, unified churches and good training to help leaders minister with joy and courage. To cope with that, each Awana program is built upon leadership that is trained to reach children, like those who use our Leader-Based Strategy (LBS) curriculum.
National missionaries, who understand the complexity of their countries, assist the churches which use the Awana program.
Changing the World in Tunisia
Other countries are not like the U.S., where kids have an array of choices for activities. When a church starts the Awana program, children have a meaningful and fun place to go as they learn about the gospel. Adults are discipled and trained to make more disciples. Awana seeks to reach more children in Tunisia with the gospel and equip more leaders there.
