Mission starts when God’s people recognize the need for the gospel in the context where they’ve been placed.
One of the most convincing ways to give your kids a heart for the nations is to give them a heart for their neighbors down the street.
Even if you’re very intentional about helping kids build their awareness of the world, it can still be difficult for them to imagine themselves in a place they’ve never been.
But it’s easy for them to imagine themselves sharing Jesus with their friends.
The gospels are full of people sharing Jesus in their immediate context. Jesus met with, talked with, and served those who were near to Him.
Pray for your neighborhood at dinnertime.
Bring groceries for your elderly neighbors.
Take a prayer walk around your neighborhood.
Help your neighbors out with their chores, yard-work, or other needs.
Have conversation with those whom no one else talks to.
Learn more.
Love more.
You can take this a step further by engaging in cross-cultural opportunities near where you live. In many ways, God has brought the nations to your neighborhood. Get creative and develop some out-of-the-box thinking. You’ll begin to see that there are powerful global ministry opportunities in your backyard.
