Changes aren’t always major. Small changes can also make big differences in the dynamics of your club.
Here are some simple tips for large-group lesson presentations.
-
-
- Put chairs in a half circle so everyone is in the front row. (This, of course, depends on class size, but can make a big difference in the attentiveness of the kids.)
- Eliminate distractions behind the speaker. Don’t teach in front of a window or glass door. And, if possible, don’t teach in front of a “busy” wall where kids can get distracted reading what’s on the wall.
- Have kids look up Scripture BEFORE the lesson and mark it in their Bibles to read to the group – although it is good to have all kids learn how to look up verses.
- Or, ask all the clubbers to look up the chapter/verse BEFORE you begin, so they know that you’re teaching from God’s Word.
- Start right in on your lesson – don’t spend a lot of time telling kids to “listen up” or “be quiet.” If you start with an exciting sentence, they will quiet down.
- Vary the tone of your voice – whisper, talk fast, talk slow, shout (when the lesson calls for it).
- Visuals are always good and help kids remember. Even if no visual is suggested, a leader can often think of something to show while teaching.
- Coordinate your song time with the truth of the lesson.
- Repeat a phrase/concept/verse so the kids take home at least one thought from what you’ve taught.
-
Above all – be enthusiastic! If you aren’t excited about your relationship with Christ – kids won’t be excited about
their own
- relationship with Christ.
