Have you ever wondered why it’s important to pray to God, who’s omniscient and in control of all creation? Our guest writer this month, Samuel Porcha’, director of  Child & Youth Discipleship Network of Awana, answers the question, “Why pray?” Consider his words, download the Around Awana Prayer Guide and lift up our clubs and leaders around the world to the One who is above all.

Why Pray?

Someone once asked me what is the point of prayer if God already knows the future and is in control of everything?

Prayer is the believers’ way of communicating with God. We pray to praise God, thank Him and tell Him how much we love Him. We pray to enjoy His presence and tell Him what is going on in our lives. We pray to make requests, seek guidance and ask for wisdom. We pray in preparation of major decisions. We pray to gain strength to overcome temptations, to overcome demonic barriers, to obtain the means of strengthening others spiritually.

Prayer is supposed to be like breathing, easier to do than to not do.

God loves this exchange with His children, just as we love the exchange we have with our children. Too often we lose sight of how simple prayer is really supposed to be. Fellowship with God is the heart of prayer. Prayer should not be seen as our means of getting God to do our will on earth, but rather as a means of getting God’s will done on earth.

Remember as it says in James 5:16b, the prayer of the righteous availeth much. May God glorify His name in our lives as we believe in Him enough to come to Him often in prayer.
