We don’t want a ministry of prayer, we want a culture of prayer. It should be like the very air you breathe. — Jon Kelly, lead pastor at Chicago West Bible Church

Hearing this teaching during the Pray First: The Priority of Prayer in Child Discipleship online event stopped me in my tracks. Have I created merely a ministry of prayer, or have I created a culture of prayer? If a ministry of prayer is something that lives on a calendar, a culture of prayer is a way of life that comes as naturally as the breath in my lungs. In my church, my home and my workplace, I want to work towards a culture of prayer that guides the way I interact with my community, family and coworkers.

What would a culture of prayer look like in your church? What steps can you take to implement the “pray now” idea with your volunteers? Watch the replay of the online event and then share it with your volunteer teams!

  • Develop a habit of praying each day! Download the monthly Around Awana Prayer Calendar and pray through the daily requests for the children of the world.

We will not always be able to walk life’s painful journeys with the children we serve. They will encounter evil, pain, sickness and the effects of sin in this fallen world. We can and should continually be in prayer for them, interceding on their behalf to our Father in Heaven. – Mike Handler, Chief Communications Officer at Awana
