Quiet, Not Silent: Spreading the Gospel Amid Persecution
Middle East & North Africa
At some point it seems like faith fell out of favor. It can feel that way in the U.S. at times. But there are places in the world that make our challenges look simple, where following Jesus can mean rejection from family and community, loss of work, imprisonment, or even death.
Knowing the risks people take to shape children’s faith in Jesus puts things into perspective. We are blessed to support child discipleship in 36 countries where persecution is real and present.
Leader Training
Around the world, community and church leaders connect with Awana to begin for the first time or strengthen child discipleship ministries. Training leaders is the first step. Yet it is never just a “one and done” session. It is about relationships: with God, between leaders and kids, and between Awana and local church leaders.
In countries where suspicion and persecution exist, safely gathering for training may be nearly impossible. Teams search for less risky places to meet, and when in-person is not possible, they turn to online training. Pray for God’s protection over these brothers and sisters as they disciple children.

Team Gatherings
This summer, Awana country coordinators met in Dubai. These leaders focus on area growth, church relations, and training volunteers. For many, their homelands are filled with unrest, so Dubai offered a safer space to pray, encourage one another, and plan for ministry. We praise God for every person who came, and we pray for those who were unable to leave their countries to join.
Adapted Curriculum
There are downsides to the digital revolution, but in places where printed biblical materials are dangerous to carry, technology is a gift. Digitized materials make it safer to share the Gospel. Oral storytelling resources like Living God’s Story allow children and adults to engage with Scripture without the risk that printed resources can bring. Please continue to pray for these creative discipleship methods.

Our Kids’ Faith is Worth It
Sharing the news of Jesus with boys and girls in these beloved but challenging places requires heart, creativity, and funds. We are grateful for the field workers who persist in finding ways to connect children with God’s Word no matter the cultural climate. And the kids are grateful too.
- “I love Awana because I play in it and have fun.” George, Egypt
- “I love Awana because it brings joy to my heart.” Sophy, unnamed country
- “I love Awana because you learn about Jesus through it.” Raos, Jordan
- “I am a small servant in Awana.” Rayan, unnamed country
With the continued prayers and financial support of disciplemakers like you, Awana can be the hands and feet of Jesus to kids in highly persecuted countries we cannot share for safety, and can be a partner for local churches in places like Egypt, Lebanon and Jordan.
