The Best Kept Secrets of Awana Part Two: n2.7 Million Kids

Awana

February 25, 2015

Vision is never only about you.
If it is, you’re dreaming too small.
Vision is always about what God wants to do.

A little while ago, I had a chance to hear Awana Co-founder Art Rorheim share his vision about the future of Awana. Since so many new things have happened in Awana in recent years, I was really excited to hear what he would say.

I was sitting down with a group of 40 Awana leaders. Art was scheduled to speak to us about what he thought the most important two words were for our organization.

Two words.
That’s it.
This was going to be good.

As you might imagine, we all sat there with baited breath—each of us silently speculating about what we thought those two words might be.

“The gospel.” Nope.
“More discipline.” Nope.
“Better leaders.” Wrong again.

Finally the words came out: “more kids.”

As Art said that, he reignited a half-century old vision—vision that started on the north side of Chicago and has now spread around the world.

It’s a little-known fact that Awana serves 2.7 million children and youth globally—and most of those kids are outside of the US.

As I sat in that room with 40 other leaders—each one with our own story, our own perspective, and our own ideas—I don’t think I could’ve stated vision of Awana any clearer: more kids.

I’m so thankful that our vision has never been, nor ever will be about us.

At our core, we are always about the other boy or girl for Christ.

If you’re curious about where these kids are around the world, check this out. It’s pretty inspiring stuff: (Bonus points: share it!)
