It’s hard to grow when you’re old.
Physically, sure.
But also organizationally.
This year, Awana turns 65.
And we’re growing strong.
Whenever you’re part of a legacy ministry there’s a deep love for heritage and the past. And that’s good. And definitely worth celebrating. But many legacy ministries find themselves in a struggle. That struggle sounds something like this: “How do we love our past but be relevant for our future?”
Some ministries will never make it out of that struggle.
But I believe Awana will make it.
Here’s why:
God is out to accomplish His mission — the same mission He called the disciples to from the very beginning. If there’s one thing that I’m excited about it’s that we’ve overcome the gravitational pull that old methods can have on an organization. And we have said clearly and confidently that we are about a mission. And that mission will be with us for the next sixty years.
But I think what excites me most about Awana is that for whatever reason, God has shown His light on us to take the heritage of the past, understand it for its mission — not its methods — and to apply that mission to new methods for the future.
It is mission over method.
Methods will change.
But our mission never will.
