4 Things to Consider Before You Beginn Club this Year

This fall, children’s ministry leaders have an unusual new responsibility in their role as Awana Directors: starting clubs this school year in the world’s new normal! As directors, you need to adapt how you run your programs during this time in order to best facilitate Awana for all kids, families, and club leaders at your churches! This is daunting whether you are well versed in Awana or it is your first year of club. But you’ve got this; flexibility, attentiveness, and resourcefulness are critical!
Here are a few things to consider this school year, along with some suggested ways to respond. Adapt these ideas within the unique context of your church and according to any current local and state health requirements.
Question: What space do you have available to accommodate social distancing?
Idea: Stay outdoors for as long as you can! Spread out in the church by utilizing any extra rooms available. Consider shortening the club night to limit exposure.
Question: What needs do my volunteers have?
Idea: Some volunteers will feel comfortable coming back to serve; others won’t. Consider creating roles for those who aren’t able to meet in person. Allow them to lead small groups online and connect with families that also would rather not meet in person.
Question: How do we keep kids and volunteers from sharing materials in club?
Idea: Play games with disposable items so kids don’t share. During small group time set colored dots on the floor to space kids six feet apart. Only use easily cleaned classroom furniture items. Create a box of resources for each leader so there is no need to share.
Question: What club components can be shared with families and volunteers and presented virtually?
Idea: Communication with parents and any announcements can be sent digitally or posted on your website and social media pages. The large group Bible story can be pre-recorded. (Do your own or use one from www.awanaplus.com.) During your shortened in-person time, focus on discipleship and relationship building with each other and with God.
No matter what you do, we’re all in this together. If you haven’t joined the Awana Ministry Director’s Facebook page, do that today! This community is an incredible resource to each one of us as we navigate this difficult season.
