Talk About: The New Family Discipleship Solution From Awana

Awana Editorial Team

March 31, 2022

Bring the Gospel home and help your kids form lasting faith, one conversation at a time, with Talk About. Talk About is our new at-home, subscription-based discipleship solution from Awana that equips parents and caregivers to bring their children to know, love and serve God for the rest of their lives.

God’s plan is that a child’s faith is primarily formed at home (Deuteronomy 6); parents and caregivers who model their faith to their children and who make time to talk to them about what they believe will tend to be more successful in passing on that faith. Even adults who may not feel they have the time or the skills to have conversations about God with their kids can easily use the materials in Talk About.

Says Chief Ministry Officer Ed Gossien, “Talk About is built around the one activity we can all do: talk to our children. Parents who talk about sports, music, friends or the family pet have all the skills they need to talk about faith.” And now they have the tools to easily fit intentional faith conversations into their family’s routine.

Centered on Scripture, each subscription includes a weekly email and access via website to the following:

Doable Family Discipleship Resources

  • Guided conversations through selected Scripture passages to help parents engage in the Bible and answer big questions with the truth of God’s Word.
  • Fun, hands-on activities that take the guesswork out of child discipleship and reinforce biblical truth. As kids color, create, sing and share, they will remember what they’ve learned throughout the week.
  • Helpful references, videos and insights that provide parents and caregivers with deeper levels of biblical knowledge and prepare them for the important work of child discipleship.

Family Conversations Include

  • The life, death and resurrection of Jesus as you “Behold your King.”
  • “God’s Big Story” of creation, the fall, redemption and restoration.
  • Understanding the authority and accuracy of “God’s Wonderful Word.”

Adults will also be able to help children answer challenging questions and develop a solid biblical worldview as they talk about:

  • How can I praise God?
  • How should I handle scary situations?
  • Who does God forgive? and other important topics

Shawna Murlin, the creator of Talk About lessons, says the word “discipleship” can seem overwhelming; however, when you look at Scripture, you see the practice of discipleship throughout the Bible.

“We see it in Deuteronomy 6 to talk about God’s Word wherever you are and wherever you’re going. In the New Testament, Paul has conversations with Timothy, encouraging and teaching him how to teach his church and, of course, we read about Jesus, sitting, eating and sharing stories with his disciples.”

Using the Bible as an example, Shawna said Talk About conversations can take place at the dinner table, on the couch or when adults are out with their kids.

Response to Talk About

The concepts were piloted during the past Advent season, and received very positive responses.

“It was just what we needed. What a blessed new tradition we have made. We did Friday evenings together in front of the fireplace with hot cocoa and family devotions.”

“Our grandson was engaged, reading the prayers and memory verses and remembered the answers to the questions and even recognized the verses when he heard them in other places. Thank you so much for providing this resource!”

“[We are a family] who is going through a major life transition of adopting our foster sibling group. This resource blessed me so much as a mom. I did not have to prepare anything; the memory verses were excellent and the content led to great discussions with my children. The coloring pages kept all ages engaged.”

“We used it all week. … We loved the Spotify® songs. We broke the single lesson into a few days, talking about the week’s question, the memory verse and singing the songs that went with that week’s theme.”

“If your child is young enough to pay attention to you and old enough to pay attention to you,” they are the right age for Talk About, says Shawna.
