Sometimes common Christian expressions can be confusing or hard to follow. Awana Marketing Coordinator Arista Teodozow shares how one such expression has impacted her life.

How to ‘Let Go and Let God’

It took me several years to fully grasp the beloved phrase, “Let go and let God.” If you, like me, have turned to God for help many times, you may wonder: What does it mean to “let go?” And how do you “let God” help you throughout this roller coaster called life?

God is always in control, even during the most painful, scary or unexpected situations. He invites us to rest in His strength. Peter put it this way: Cast all your anxieties on Him, because He cares for you. (1 Peter 5:7) When we feel overwhelmed, we are reminded to give control over to God.

Lysa TerKeurst says, “God is mighty. God is caring. God is worthy of praise. God is loving. God is able. God is in control. Nothing takes God by surprise.” Through prayer, we can engage with God and, over time, learn to surrender all the many things we find difficult to release. Prayer is the way to know God better and to love God more.

You may have asked yourself, “What does The Bible tell us about prayer?” Colossians 4:2 says: Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving.

I’ve learned that the more I commit to prayer, the easier it becomes to be vulnerable and, as a result, the more I’m able to trust God. Jesus said, “And I tell you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.” (Luke 11:9)

When we pray, God is faithful to act. We may not receive what we ask for and our prayers may not be answered in our time frame; but through prayer, He hears us, and our personal relationship with Him will develop and grow even stronger.
