10 Ways – Celebrating Your Child’s Spiritual Birthday
Celebrating birthdays is a big deal for most kids. Some parents vie for the biggest and best party for their children and others go for simple family celebrations.
But what about a child’s spiritual birthday? Many families celebrate the date their child trusted Christ. You might already have spiritual-birthday traditions, if not, here are some ideas.
1. Write the date and circumstances surrounding a child trusting Christ – in the child’s Bible or a family Bible. This isn’t exactly a celebration, but it’s a good thing for the child to know. Sometimes kids feel the need to respond to every invitation they hear “just to make sure.” Having a date written down can help with that doubt. If you are a leader who leads a child to Christ, suggest that you, the parent or the child write the date on the flyleaf of her Bible. You can have the child add what the lesson was about or the circumstances surrounding the event. (If a child doesn’t have a Bible, you could present her with a Bible with the date and a word of encouragement added to the inside front cover.)
2. Send the child a card with a note of encouragement. You could make your own spiritual birthday greeting.
3. Take your child out to dinner and let him known how glad you are that he is a Christ-follower.
4. Buy a kids’ devotional book or other book that will encourage her in her faith or purchase an iTune gift card for her to download Christian music.
5. Help your child pick out “a verse of the year” that will be an encouragement.
6. Bake a cake.
7. Let relatives know that the child’s spiritual birthday is coming up. Ask them to write a note or send a card of encouragement.
8. Invite the extended family over for a celebratory dinner.
9. Have the child write in a notebook or do a video each year, sharing what it means for him to be a Christ-follower. Keep the notebook or the video for a spiritual history. What a child says when he is six will be different from what he says at 16.
10. Pray together with your child. Thank the Lord that the child has trusted Him as Savior. Pray that the child will walk in wisdom and desire to do God’s will.
