Every leader has blind spots. Trusted leaders acknowledge those blind spots and get better.
I can think back to a particularly busy season in ministry. I was very busy, but I was also deeply unhealthy. I was leading three different ministries, working an average of 60+ hours per week, and straining my family life all for the sake of building the ministry I loved.
But something was deeply wrong. I felt it. My heart wasn’t right.
Leaders are only as effective as their weakest link – the place where they are unable to handle any more stress. The scary part is that we all have a weakest link. But there’s also great comfort in that. Trusted leaders are open and honest about their weaknesses.
Consider taking some time to reflect and honestly ask yourself, “Where I am the weakest right now?”
In my case, it meant asking some close friend and co-workers: “How do you see me right now? Am I a joy to be around?” Through those honest conversations, I was able to face some truths about myself that I didn’t see, gradually turn the corner, and grow as a leader.
Honesty is hard. But it’s always worth it in the long run.
