Bringing the Word of God to Haiti
Haiti
Meet Katie! Katie was an Awana leader at a church in Arizona that is passionate about reaching kids in Haiti with the gospel. After Katie’s family moved to Haiti, God called Katie into being an Awana missionary in Haiti. Check out her story!
I grew up as an Awana kid myself. I have vivid memories of my Grannie Nell taking me and my cousins down to her little white church in Indianapolis, Indiana when I was in 4th or 5th grade. My experience was complete with flannel boards, games in the gym, and memorizing scriptures with friends. Recently, I even found some of the old Awana buttons off my vest!
Fast forward 25 years, and I’m a mom with six kids of my own. We moved to Arkansas, and began attending Cross Church in Springdale. Not long after we arrived, the children’s ministry staff started wearing t-shirts that said, “IT’S COMING” on the front, and the Awana logo on the back. I was so excited that my kids would be a part of the same program that helped lay the foundation for my own faith so many years before. We were glad to volunteer, and spent the next five years in various roles from game time leader to T&T commander.
During those five years at Cross Church, we realized God’s calling on our lives was to serve full time in Haiti. Shortly before we moved, we were approached about launching an Awana club at our church in Haiti. What an opportunity to take the Word of God to the kids that we loved!
Through the financial support of Cross Church’s Verse-a-Thon, in March 2017, we held a SeedPlanters conference with 25 churches in Gressier, Haiti. Through the newly launched clubs in these 25 churches, more than 70 leaders were trained and 1,000 more kids reached with the Gospel every week in our community!
About this same time, the Awana coordinator who had been serving in Haiti was preparing to transition back to the United States. I began to pray about serving in this position. The Lord spoke to me through 2 Timothy 2:17, how false teaching spreads like gangrene. I knew that partnering with Awana to bring the Word of God to as many children as possible was where the Lord wanted me to invest my time.
Since then, I’ve been trying to raise up strong Haitian leaders who can help us reach even further. We have held several more Seed Planters conferences in other cities and have several more on the calendar for 2018.
It is a blessing to me, looking back on my life—I can see that what he began in me at the little white church in Indiana has grown through my time in Arkansas, and now Haiti. Only God knows what adventures will come next!
Cross Church’s Awana Club helped reach the kids in Haiti by doing a Verse-a-Thon. Check out this video to see how your club can make a difference for kids somewhere else in the world.
