Q&A: Coming In Time with Cubbies

Time in class for Cubbies is spent in several segments: Coming In Time (Cubbies welcome activity), Lesson Time (a puppet show, singing, prayer, and a Bible lesson), Snack Time (the lesson plans include snack suggestions that relate to the lesson so that children can better remember what they learned), Handbook Time (a small group discipleship time to work on the lesson and verse in the kids’ handbook), and Play Time (games and movement that reinforce the lesson topic).
This week we’re sharing some Q&A regarding the Coming In Time.
Q: What should I do with kids who arrive early?
Early-arrival kids are often children of Awana leaders or kids whose parents are involved in another church ministry. Be intentional to welcome them – they are helping their parents serve by being willing to come early. It’s good to have something on hand for them to do. You can have them help set up and start the Cubbies welcome activity before other Cubbies arrive or involve them somehow in your final preparations.
Q: What’s helpful about including Coming In Time in my schedule?
The purpose of Coming In Time welcome activity is to make the children feel welcome and get them settled into their time in class. Encourage your leaders to greet and shepherd kids into the activities. If possible, encourage leaders to start conversations with Cubbies that introduce the topics for this week’s class. This is also a great time to check in with parents as they drop off their children.
