Helpful Information About Your Child: Memory

A child’s brain is rapidly developing from infancy onward, building connections, understanding, and memory. The toddler and preschool years are a key window for this development!

Here are some basic ways you can reinforce what you want a young child to remember, especially as it relates to spiritual things.

Repetition

When you repeat something with your child many times, you are building a stronger pathway in their brain that will link them to that information. Is there a phrase or song you can sing with them often that includes a Biblical truth you want to stick with them? Use it repeatedly as you go about daily life, in quiet and fun moments!

Stories

Embed the things you want them to remember in a story form. A story lasts much longer in our memory than a set of facts. What’s the most important thing you want your child to know about God? What stories can you use (from the Bible, a picture book, or from your own life) to embed this spiritual truth in your child’s memory? Try a few out and see what works best for your child!

Visual Association

Find a picture that you can use to help your child remember something. It could be a photo, a picture from your favorite children’s Bible, coloring page, or even one you draw yourself. When you find one, tape it up where your child can see it and refer to it in connection with what you want them to know!
